Wound Care

The old cliché, "Time heals all wounds," is not always valid when it comes to wounds that just won't heal. If a wound hasn't healed in two weeks, chances are that therapeutic services will be necessary to allow and/or cause the wound to mend. Baptist Hospital's Wound Care Center is staffed by two Surgical Clinic surgeons, along with other downtown physicians. Debridement is a term that refers to the removal of dead, damaged or infected tissue, to promote healing at the site of injury. The Wound Care Center provides debridements, as well as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. In this therapy, a patient rests inside a chamber while breathing 100% oxygen. This allows the body to send 20 to 30 times the normal amount of oxygen to the wound. The desired result is for the body's natural healing mechanisms to function more efficiently - producing healthy tissues in place of the wound.
